I bought a ZF core transmission at a wrecking yard for $275.00. It was out of a 89 7.3L. I then switched the housings ( a little tricky but not bad). The problem was in 88 ford switched to a dual mass fly wheel and dampered clutch ( if you don't have it you get excesssive gear noise). 88 is when they started using the ZF 5 speed.The only synthetic ATF I’ve been able to find is Mobile 1 Multivehicle ATF.
