Currently, Purdue is home to 81 fraternities and sororities. Members of fraternities and sororities are involved in a variety of programs which enhance their college experience. In fact, members of fraternities and sororities report having a better overall undergraduate experience while at Purdue than non-members. The NPHC was founded as a unit when a handful of historically Black fraternities and sororities (which were founded in the early 1900s) came together in 1930 to provide a haven and community for Black students on predominantly white campuses. Over the years, what started out as a handful of organizations grew into the affectionately nicknamed ...Purdue’s greek life is substantially hindered by its governing body, the IFC and Panhellenic council, which are student ran, but are merely puppets for the Purdue governing officials to play with. The governing body at Purdue doesn’t want Purdue to be known as a very social/fun/party school, and hindering Greek life is a priority for them.
